Installation steps & troubleshooting

Step 1: Check the requirements

Prior to installing Intella, Intella Investigator, or Intella Connect, please review the hardware and software requirements outlined in the 'Selecting a Computer to Host Your Intella Software' article.

  • Operating systems
Intella is supported on the following operating systems: Widows 11 64-bit editions only. Windows Server editions 2016 and 2019 (Extended Support), 2022 and 2025 are also compatible and supported, but please note that we do not provide technical support for configuring these systems. Any necessary changes must be made by your IT team. We do not support our products when installed on an operating system deemed end of life by its manufacturer. For example, these would include platforms such as Windows Vista and Windows Server 2012.
To run Intella Investigator / Intella connect as a service, you will need the Windows Server or Windows 11 Pro edition. Please note that the Home edition is not able to run the application as a service. More information about running Intella as a service.
  • User account
The installer must run using a Windows account with administrator privileges for the system and resources.
  • Required software
    - To index IBM Notes NSF files, you need IBM Notes 12.0.1 (64-bit) or higher. In addition, Intella requires the location of Lotus Notes to index NSF files. You can set the location and validate Notes in Intella by navigating to File > Preferences > clicking on the MS Outlook or IBM Notes tab, and then clicking on the Validate button.

Step 2: Learn about licenses and dongles

Please take note that the software you have downloaded comes with a trial license. This means that you have a limited time to evaluate the software's features and functionalities before deciding whether to purchase the full version.
  • 14-Day evaluation period
The evaluation version of Intella or W4 runs under a HASP software license that comes bundled with the installer. This license allows you to use the software for 14 days. Please note that the evaluation period cannot be extended. To continue using Intella or W4 after the trial expires, you will need to purchase a dongle
  • Continue working with a USB dongle
If you would like to continue using Intella or W4 beyond this trial period, you will need to purchase a license. Once you have bought the license, you will receive a USB dongle that will enable you to continue using the version you have already installed. Any cases created using the trial version will remain accessible.
Note: The USB dongle is shipped without a pre-installed license. To activate it, please contact Support.
  • System clock
Changing the time on your system clock will cause the trial to expire automatically. If this happens, the only way to continue using Intella will be to purchase a license.
  • Virtual Machines, VMware
To safeguard our intellectual property, the evaluation version of our product is not compatible with virtual machine (VM) environments. Running the evaluation version requires a physical computer. Please note that this restriction only applies to the evaluation version; a version of Intella that has a dongle will run in a VM environment.
  • RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) connections
The evaluation version of Intella cannot be accessed remotely through an RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) connection without the dongle. To use it remotely, the dongle must be inserted into the computer running the Intella software, not into the computer running the RDP client/viewer software.
  • Other dongle-protected software must be closed
To install Intella, make sure to close all other HASP-protected software, including EnCase (OpenText), SmartMount (ASR Data), and HBGary products. Running these programs simultaneously during installation may cause conflicts.
  •  SL License
Intella Connect and Investigator support an SL (Software License) option, eliminating the need for a physical dongle.             This option is well suited for virtual  environments remote servers, and organizations managing centralized                             deployments. You can learn more about SL Licenses here https://vound.info/sl-configuration

Step 3: Install the software

If you are already a customer, you can download the installer files here: https://www.vound-software.com/software-downloads

Note: To access the installer downloads for your dongle products, you must provide your dongle ID. The downloads page offers several methods for obtaining your dongle ID.

After downloading the installer files, please follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the installer file, and select "Run as administrator" to launch the installer.
  2. Accept the license agreement.
  3. Choose a location to store the application files and shortcuts. You can accept the default settings or specify a different location. For Intella, the default location is "C:\Program Files\Vound\Intella [VERSION]". All files will be extracted to your chosen location, and a shortcut for your product will be (optionally) placed on your desktop and in your Start menu.

Note: Our products cannot be installed in a directory that already contains a previous version of the product. If an earlier version of the product is already installed on the system, the new version must be installed in a new or different directory.

After installation, the application folder will include an executable for the product, which can be launched to start the application. Desktop and menu shortcuts will also start this executable. More information about upgrades.

Step 4: Troubleshooting installation issues

Occasionally, you may encounter issues during Intella installation, which are typically related to error codes generated by the licensing component of the program. To assist with troubleshooting, we've created a guide specifically designed to help resolve these issues
