The latest version of Intella products includes:
- Bug fixes and performance improvements that enhance the overall functionality of the tools.
- New features that make processing faster, data analysis easier, and add more functionality to the tools.
In this article, we will discuss how to upgrade to the latest version of Intella and Intella Connect while keeping all settings intact.
Common Steps and information for Upgrading Intella, Intella Connect and Intella Investigator
Important information regarding an upgrade:
-
You can install the new version side by side with an older version of the software.Note: If you run our software as a Windows Service, please remember that only one instance can be installed and run. Installing Intella Connect or Intella Investigator as a service when an existing service already exists will overwrite the existing service configuration.
- Make sure that you are always using the same Windows Account when installing different versions of any Intella Product. The configuration and settings for your current version are stored in a user-sensitive location, and those locations will not be available to other user accounts. Using the same account means that configurations from the previous version are automatically migrated over to the updated version.
Before starting the upgrade process:
- Review the Release Notes for both Intella and Intella Connect, paying particular attention to the 'Upgrade Notes' section.
Release Notes are available in the particular section on our website:
Intella Professional: https://www.vound-software.com/docs/intella/latest
Intella Connect: https://www.vound-software.com/docs/connect/latest
Intella Investigator: https://www.vound-software.com/docs/investigator/latest - Back up your Intella system(s) before undertaking any upgrades.
-
Make a backup of the folders that contain all configuration settings prior to proceeding with the upgrade. These folders depends on the product:
Intella Professional: "C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER\AppData\Roaming\Intella\"
Intella Connect: "C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER\AppData\Roaming\Intella Connect\"
Intella Investigator: "C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER\AppData\Roaming\Intella Investigator\"
... where YOUR_WINDOWS_USER is the Windows user account that Intella runs under. - New major versions of Intella products require a dongle or SL key update. See https://vound.info/dongle-activation for dongles, and https://www.vound-software.com/dongle-update for SL keys. For example, a major version is when you upgrade from 3.0.x to 3.1.x (the second number changes). Or from 2.7.x to 3.1.x (the first number changes).
- In case you use custom fonts, they have to be copied from "Font" folder of the previous version of Intella to the upgraded version. The folder is located in the main Intella folder, for example C:\Program Files\Vound\Intella 3.1\font.
This applies to all Intella Products mentioned in this article.

- When upgrading Connect and Investigator it's also mandatory to upgrade Intella Node.
Case Conversion

Migrating Keystores and Self-Signed SSL Certificates
When upgrading to an updated version of Intella Connect and Intella Investigator:
- You may need to reconfigure some advanced settings like SSL.
- Self-signed certificates do not work when an updated version of Intella Connect, Intella Investigator or Intella Node is installed.
To trust the self-signed certificates, you need to update Java's trusted CA store after each upgrade for each software (Connect, Investigator and Node).
When users/companies create their own self-signed certificates, they usually create two Certification Authorities (ROOT & Intermediate), and then let the Intermediate CA issue the certificates. But, Java doesn't know anything about ROOT & Intermediate certificates for that company, and these certificates are not automatically trusted. Therefore, the self-signed certificates do not work when an updated version of Intella Connect or Intella Node is installed.
Note: When you are upgrading Connect, Investigator or Node, the existing (trusted) Java store is wiped out and replaced with a clean one. To trust the self-signed certificates, you must add the certificates to the trusted CA store of the JAVA RUNTIME that we shipped with the installer used for the upgrade. This process is described in the administrator's manual at the links below:
Intella Connect: https://vound.info/connect-self-signed-cert
To summarize, if you are generating your own SSL self-signed certificates, then you will need to update Java's trusted CA store for Intella Connect, Intella Investigator and Intella Node after each upgrade.
