Migrate users from an old Investigator/Connect instance to a new one

Users, roles and permissions, and other configuration settings are stored in Intella's AppData directories, so you can copy these files over from the existing Intella Investigator or Connect instance to the new machine.

This is partly covered in the user manual, and you may wish to take another look here for any other migration steps:

To transfer only the users:

1. First, ensure Intella Investigator or Connect is not running on the source and destination machines.

2. Make a backup of these existing folders (as a precaution) on both the source and destination machines:
- (If you're running Investigator) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella Investigator
- (If you're running Connect) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella Connect
- (In all cases) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella

.. where [YOUR_USER] is the Windows account that Investigator or Connect runs under.

Not seeing the AppData folders? Are the AppData folders fully or partially empty?
Configuration files for Intella are stored in the AppData folders of the Windows account that Intella is running under.
This means that if you start Intella under "User A", AppData folders and configuration files will be created solely for User A's account.
If you then log into the "User B" Windows account and start Intella, brand new AppData folders and configuration files will be created, separate from User A's configuration files.
This also applies if you're starting Intella as a standalone application (e.g. IntellaConnect.exe), and then running Intella under a Windows Service account that has a "Log On As" property set to a different user.

So if you're not seeing any AppData folders, or if the folders are fully or partially empty, this likely means you're not looking under the correct Windows user account.

To make sure you're looking at the correct user account:
- Start Intella Investigator Connect on the source machine that holds the users you want to transfer.
- Log in using an admin account.
- Navigate to System -> General.
- The Windows user that Intella is running under will be displayed, as well as the full paths to where the configuration data is being stored.

3. Copy over the following files from the source machine (having numerous users) to the destination machine:
- (If you're running Connect) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella Connect\users.enc
- (If you're running Investigator) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella Investigator\users.enc
- (In all cases) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella\auth\auth.xml
- (In all cases) C:\Users\[YOUR_USER]\AppData\Roaming\Intella\auth\users.xml

4. (Optional) Depending on how the users were originally set up, there may be other settings in those folders that need to be migrated over (e.g. LDAP / OAuth providers), so we recommend taking a look at the other files to be certain.

5. Start Investigator or Connect on the new machine and confirm whether the users can log in to the new machine.
