How to Upgrade Intella Team to Intella Investigator

This KB article discusses how to install Intella Investigator, import cases from Intella Team, and set up users.

Note that training is available for the installation and usage of Intella Investigator.

Steps to upgrade:
  1. Download the Intella Investigator installer from: https://www.vound-software.com/software-downloads
  2. Right-click the installer and select "Run as Administrator", even if you're logged into an administrator account. This can helps to prevent hard-to-diagnose permissions-based issues.

3. When the installer opens, read the description and click Next.

4. Read and agree to the License Agreement.

5. Choose typical or custom installation. If you choose typical, it will install both Investigator and Node to C:\Program Files\Vound\Intella Investigator [version]. If you wish to install in a different location or install only Investigator/Node, please choose “Custom” installation. (Note: Intella Node is required to be able to Index sources in cases via Intella Investigator. Please refer to the Investigator User Manuals for more information).

6. If you choose Custom installation, the next screen will ask you which products would you like to Install. If you have no other instance of Node already set up, choose both to install both products, and click Next.

7. You will now have to specify the path that you want the products installed to.

8. You will now need to provide the Windows Service account credentials. Instructions on how to create a valid service account can be found here: https://vound.info/windows-service-account
Alternatively, if you do not have a Windows Service account, are unable to create one, or simply don't want to use one, please un-tick the option to install as a service and click Next.
If you're unfamiliar with Windows Services and their implications, please contact your IT administrator to assist you with Investigator's installation and refer to the Investigator user manual for guidance.

9. (If you're installing Investigator as a Windows Service) Once the valid credentials are entered, please click Next.

10. Choose the start menu shortcuts path, if you wish. Then click "Install" to install the software.

11. The installation process will begin.

12. After the installation completes, a webpage with setup steps will appear to help you get started. When you click on the Login button in Step 4, new browser window opens with the login screen to Intella Investigator. From here, you'll need to type in your credentials to the Admin Dashboard. (Default credentials are Login: admin; Password: admin)

13. Please note that if Intella is installed as a Windows Service, it may be installed under a separate user than the one you're currently logged into. This means that all configurations and cases from Team Manager will be unavailable. In order to import the old cases, log in the Admin Dashboard and go to the “Import” tab.

14. Here, you can specify the path where your case(s) are located, and click Add Case.

15. This case will now be available on the “List” tab.

16. Your case will likely be too old to run directly within Intella Investigator, and the case will require conversion. To do that, click on the “Convert Case” button.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure that Intella Node service or application (depending on the installation options you chose) is running. Intella Node is required for the conversion process.
IMPORTANT NOTE 2: The conversion process can be time consuming depending on the case size. Please make sure adequate downtime window is scheduled since, during the process, the case will be unavailable to reviewers.

17. You will receive a dialog window advising that the conversion action will create a copy of the case. The existing, old case will still be available for use with older versions of Intella.

18. Clicking "Yes" will give you a dialog window to specify the "Name" of the newly created case, the case folder where the new case will be located, and the Node you can use to convert the case. If you installed Intella as a Windows Service, the Node should already be available from the dropdown menu. If you have not installed Intella as a Windows Service, you need to start the IntellaNode.exe application from the Investigator installation path.

19. Once you click "Start Conversion", the process will run in the background.

20. When the conversion process is finished, you will have the “Finish case conversion” button available. Click this button.

21. Intella will then ask you if you wish to add the case to the list, to which you would typically answer “yes”.

22. The case will then be made available in the case list.

23. Review the following User Manual sections to:
1) Set up Intella user accounts: https://vound.info/investigator-user-management
2) Grant user access to the case: https://vound.info/investigator-grant-case-access

After performing these actions, you'll be able to click on the “Share” button, which will make the Case URL clickable. After clicking it, you or your case reviewers will be taken to a new browser window where the case is located.
