Overview
Cases stored on an Intella Node cannot be shared directly for review in Intella Connect or Intella Investigator.
Before making a Node-created case available for review, the case must first be removed from the Intella Node Cases list without deleting the underlying case data. This releases the case so that it can be opened by Intella Connect or Intella Investigator.
To remove the case from Intella Node:
- Open the Case List.
- Select the case.
- Click Remove Case.
-
Disable/clear the Also remove the related case folder from disk option. Ensure the toggle is greyed out and disabled, because otherwise this option permanently deletes the case and its associated data.
- Click OK.
Once the case has been removed from the Intella Node Cases list, it must be made accessible to the Connect or Investigator server. Depending on your environment, there are three supported ways to accomplish this.
Note: For the best indexing performance, Vound recommends storing the case and its evidence on the Intella Node during processing. When the case is ready for review, remove it from the Node Cases list (without deleting it from disk), then make it available to Connect or Investigator using one of the methods below.
Sharing options
Option 1: Move the case to the Connect or Investigator server
Copy or move the case from the Intella Node to storage that is local to the Connect or Investigator server.
Once the transfer is complete:
Import the case into the Cases list.
Share the case from the Intella UI.
Advantages
Best review performance because the case is stored locally on the server.
Simplest storage configuration.
Considerations
Large cases may take considerable time to copy.
The destination server must have sufficient free disk space.
Option 2: Share the case from the Intella Node using a Windows shared folder
If you do not want to move the case, you can expose the Node's case location as a Windows shared folder.
Create a Windows shared folder on the Intella Node.
Ensure the Connect or Investigator server has access to the share.
Configure the location as a Shared Folder in the Intella UI.
Import the case from the shared location.
Share the case.
Advantages
No need to duplicate the case on another server.
Faster to set up when sufficient network connectivity already exists.
Considerations
Case access depends on network performance.
Windows file sharing and permissions must be configured correctly.
Network interruptions may affect case access.
Option 3: Store the case on shared network storage (not recommended)
Instead of storing the case on either the Node or the Connect/Investigator server, place it on network-accessible storage that both systems can access.
While this configuration is supported, Vound does not generally recommend it. We've found that network-hosted cases are more likely to encounter issues related to storage performance, network reliability, and file permissions. In many environments, the underlying hardware or network infrastructure is not sufficient to provide the consistent performance and reliability required for case processing and review.
Once the storage location is available:
Configure it as an accessible location if necessary.
Import the case into Connect or Investigator.
Share the case.
Advantages
Centralized storage that can be accessed by multiple systems.
Useful for environments with dedicated shared storage infrastructure.
Considerations
Network latency may reduce performance compared to local storage.
Reliable networking and storage infrastructure are essential.
File permissions must be configured correctly for all participating systems.
For guidance on supported storage configurations, see Network Storage: https://vound.info/network-storage.
Importing the case
After the case is accessible to Connect or Investigator:
Open the Cases tab.
Select the Import sub-tab.
Under Existing Case, enter the case path or browse to its location. Ensure you select Server Local Folder (e.g. Intella Investigator/Connect) or Shared Folder (a Windows Shared Folder), depending on which option you chose earlier.
Select Use.
After the case is validated, select Add Case.
Sharing the case
After importing:
Select the case in the Cases list.
Select Share.
Copy the generated case URL and distribute it to reviewers as needed.
You may optionally edit the Case alias before sharing to customize the URL. Only alphanumeric characters and hyphens (-) are supported.
Troubleshooting
If you cannot share the case:
Verify the case has been imported into the Cases list.
Confirm the Connect or Investigator server can access the case location.
Verify Windows or network storage permissions are configured correctly.
Ensure another Vound application does not currently have the case open.
If reviewers cannot open the shared URL, refresh the browser or reopen the link.
Summary
Cases stored on an Intella Node cannot be shared directly. To make them available in Intella Connect or Intella Investigator, use one of the following methods:
Move the case to storage local to the Connect or Investigator server.
Share the case directly from the Node using a Windows shared folder.
Store the case on shared network storage that both systems can access.
The best option depends on your storage capacity, network infrastructure, and performance requirements.
