The text in Intella is squashed and overlapping

We have had reports about the text in Intella being very small or the items in the Details table being squashed together or overlapping. This can be to the point where you can't read the names or metadata for items in the case.

We have discovered that this behavior is related to Windows scaling and resolution settings. We see the issue mostly on the newer systems that have 4K ultra HD resolution screens capable of 3840×2160 resolution, but it can also occur on lower resolution monitors such as 1920x1080 or below.

There are two settings in Windows that affects the display of Intella:

1. On the 4K systems we notice that the scaling control in Windows (which changes the size of text, apps and other items) can be set higher than 100% by default. We have seen this set as high as 250% on one system. Because the resolution is so high, the scaling setting needs to be increased. If this is not increased, it would likely be difficult to read the text in apps as it will be too small.

At this time, Intella works best when the scaling is set to 100%. It is not that Intella won't work if you increase the scaling control. For example, you may see a small difference if you set the scaling control to 125%, but this may still be workable for many people. However, as you go higher the text etc. gets smaller and more condensed which makes the text hard to read.

For best results when using Intella, set the scaling to 100%. In Windows 10 this can be done by right clicking on the screen and selecting the 'Display settings'. Under the 'Display' tab you will see the Scale dropdown which can be adjusted to 100%.

2. When the abovementioned scaling setting is set to 100%, you may find that the font is so small that it becomes difficult to read. This can be changed by adjusting the resolution that is being displayed. The resolution for a 4K screen could be set to a very high resolution such as 3840×2160. It is up to the user which resolution setting suits them, but we find that 1920x1080 is quite good as a rule of thumb. If the resolution is set higher, particularly on a smaller laptop screen, the font may be too small to use the computer comfortably.

To change the resolution, use the dropdown in the Display resolution settings (see above).

Once the settings have been changed, the computer will likely need to be rebooted before the settings will take effect. Once rebooted, when you run Intella you should see that the text in Intella is not squashed or overlapping anymore.

Troubleshooting

If you have done the steps above and the text is still not showing properly, you could try the following:

  1. Right click on the Intella shortcut and click on Properties.
  2. Click on the Compatibility tab.
  3. Click on the 'Change high DPI settings' button.
  4. A new panel will be shown. Check the option to 'Override High DPI scaling behavior' and select the 'System' option from the dropdown (see the screenshot below).
  5. Click on the Ok buttons to save the changes.
